Stepping Out – The Murray Bridge Players and Singers

Stepping Out – The Murray Bridge Players and Singers

The close knit company of the Murray Bridge Players and Singers is brought to the fore with two of the directors playing major parts and the choreographer taking on the lead role. Mavis Reu as Vera and Peta Davis as Dorothy managed to direct all the cast in their respective roles with clear delineation between the actors.

Dorothy is the uncoordinated member of the dance class who had the audience waiting for her next move. Vera was the annoying one who tried to take charge and keep the place clean and organized.

The dance teacher, Mavis, played by Louise McCullough had personal problems which manifested throughout the play but still managed to keep the troupe together. All classes need a piano player and Mrs Fraser was brought to life by Cathy Miegel with her holier than thou attitude and her surprise ending.

The shy member of the troupe was Andy brilliantly underplayed by Eliza Davis who like so many of the cast has personal problems. Tenille Schulz came into her own as Sylvia the flirt with some of her unwanted attention directed towards the only male in the cast, Geoffrey, cleverly portrayed by Hamish Plummer. This role gave him the chance to show off his many talents as a shy introvert and a very talented dancer and singer.

Kate Miegel was Lynne the almost normal nurse while Lorelle Barton as Maxine had the part of the over the top, girl of the class who loved talking. Monika Hatcher as Rose was memorable not only for her performance but also for some of the costumes she dared to wear.

The class was rounded out with four talented dancers, Ebony Francis as Darlene, Karen Schilling as Meredith, Maddie Farley as Ingrid and Jayne Rossiter as Sandra.

The many costume changes were all relevant and cleverly brought to the fore during the rehearsal scenes and wowed at the finale.

The eight piece band led by musical director Christine Hodgen never missed a beat and the backstage crew ensured everything ran smoothly. There was only one major scene change which was quickly and efficiently carried out.

Over all the singing was pleasant but the score did not allow the actors to reach their full potential. The acting and dancing on the other hand were exceptional, rounded off with a grand finale.
