MAID OF THE MOUNTAINS – SALOS

It is always a pleasure to see people getting so much joy from singing – even more so when the singing is really good  and the audience not only feels the joy but hears it as well! I have to confess opera – even light – is not my favourite and I have not attended a South Australian Light Opera Society Inc production before. I was very pleasantly surprised and thoroughly entertained.

Pam Tucker, as director of SALOS’s production of The Maid of the Mountains has put together an enthusiastic cast who have been well rehearsed by Musical Director, Peter Potts. The enthusiasm of the chorus of Brigands and Townsfolk keep the plot moving and there is never a dull moment. Every cast member played their part convincingly but it would be remiss of me not to mention the sweet sounds of Dione Baker, as Teresa, the Maid of the Mountains, Greg Paterson as Baldasarre, Ricki Coxhill as Beppo and Noel Carthew as General Malona.

The costumes designed by Cyndy Trezise were authentic and there was an obvious concentration on detail provided by the team. Set design worked well for the space and changes were effected without interrupting the flow. Overall, a really good production and the respect given to SALOS is well-deserved. Well done all involved.
