Hair Today Gone Tomorrow – Two Wells Melodrama Group

Two Wells Melodrama is one of our smaller theatre groups but boy do they pack a punch.  They were founded back in 1982 and their mission is to raise money for the local community.  Over the years they have donated to many different community organisations, but this years’ donation from the nightly raffle with remain much closer to home.  The straw roof of the community centre needs to be replaced to be fire compliant otherwise they will lose their home.  No doubt we can all empathise with what TWMG is going through with many of us having gone through similar situations. In fact The Rep currently is raising funds to make their theatre more accessible.  We all need to support each other or run the risk of losing some amazing theatre in South Australia.

As is the case every year, the show was written by members of Melodrama.  This year it was Janene Lynn, ably assisted by Anne Arbor and Kay Boon both long time performers and members of TWMG.

Based around the carefree, psychedelic 70’s with long hair, bright paisley prints, chocolate brownies, free love and the infamous Sandman the show had it all. With its usual hilarity the show opens with the young cast discussing their loves, hopes and desires.  Obviously as in any melodrama nothing goes to plan and Boy wants Girl but can’t see a way to get her because they don’t communicate is the background of the show.  In this particular case Harry, played by Nick Algae is desperately in love with Faith, played by Theresa Moore.  Sadly Theresa is currently dating Ethan played by Philip Moore (yes they are related) but she would rather be with Harry (only in the show).  Neither of them have spoken to the other about their feelings. They just assume they are not good enough until Harry is convinced to visit Madam Rue, a gypsy who can mix a potion to solve any problem.  Wilma/Willow (Erna Collins), Granny (Janine Lynn) and Hazel (Anne Arbor) convince Harry to meet with Madam Rue (Kay Boon) to produce for him a Potion which will hopefully get the girl.  Unfortunately they do it whilst they are eating Hazel’s “special” Chocolate Brownies and Love Potion No 9 becomes Hair Grow Potion No 6.

Another regular at TWMG is Gio Cavallaro (affectional known as Johnny) this time playing The King himself Elvis, aka Cyril.  His long suffering mate, Ziggy (Lance Grant) is also the bemused husband of Wilma/Willow and can’t seem to figure his wife out.  Rounding out the cast is Autumn (Emma Sharpe) and Meadow (Skye MacDonald) who are both keen to remove Faith from Ethan’s arm and place themselves there; Pete (Adam Rolling) is friend to Harry and always trying to encourage him to speak up and talk with Faith; Kit (Paul Schmelzkopf) is the Einstein Inventor who lives next door and Policeman (John McInerney) who is also Faith’s father.

This is probably one of the best cases of 6 degrees of separation I have ever seen.  The production could be anywhere in Adelaide the way everyone knows everyone else or is related to everyone else.

I would be totally remiss if I did not mention the amazing catering team lead by Robyn Ford with Wendy Sharpe.  The meal as always ladies was spectacular with an entree of Apricot Chicken, main of Lamb Roast with vegetables and Hazel’s Special Chocolate Brownies without the special herbs.  There is absolutely no excuse for not attending this production as the catering team are fully geared up to deal with any dietary requirements that you might throw at them.

Finally the Wait and Bar Staff need to be acknowledged as their speed and efficiency in getting so many meals out and drinks to tables (yes you heard it, there was table service) was outstanding.

Please I implore you, if you are looking for an entertaining afternoon/night out with great food, fun, laughter and the opportunity to participate get along to Two Wells.  Remaining shows are Friday 23rd, Sunday 25th (Matinee), Friday 30th and Saturday 31st May.  Cost is $50.00 for all evening performances which includes the 3 course meal and $45.00 for Sunday 25th for a 2 course Main and Dessert.  Where else could you go for these prices?
