Firstly, I wish to congratulate Promise Adelaide for their dedication to theatre in Adelaide and providing an opportunity for amazing young talent to perform.
Secondly for their selection of material. To constantly find and secure the rights for unknown works not only in Adelaide but Australia is both brave and exciting.
ALL IS CALM showcases 14 individuals who each brought their own, very emotional, poignant and superb talents to the stage. The program identifies Trevor Anderson as Musical Director very ably assisted by Ben Francis, however unlike most “musicals”, the music was the voices. The entire show was a cappella with amazing and truly outstanding harmonies throughout.
The story revolves around the reported Christmas Truce during 1914, the first year of the Great War. It is told through the eyes of the soldiers, their excitement, fear, camaraderie, terror and shear frustration at the futility of war, from both English and German perspectives.
I cannot and will not single out any one performance as the entire production – from sets, lighting, selection of background music, audio, directing and performance were all exceptional and made for a truly wonderous production. It took me the drive home to relax from the emotional journey I had been taken on and my only suggestion would be perhaps the company could sell the little packs of tissues along with the programs in the foyer.
A truly awe-inspiring night of theatre and I encourage everyone to get along – if you can still get a ticket.
