Wonderful World of DISSOCIA

26 September 2022 @ 5:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Written By: Anthony Neilson

Creative Team: Directed by Thomas Filsell

The Wonderful World of Dissocia is an off-the-wall, at times hilarious, at times disturbing, ultimately profoundly thought-provoking play, featuring vivid, unique and unforgettable characters, and wondrous settings which contrast to a degree rarely seen in the theatre. Aside from being laugh-out-loud funny, the play also has an important message to convey regarding mental health.
Dissocia tells the story of Lisa, a young woman battling with a dissociative disorder. In order to regain ‘balance’ in her life, Lisa must successfully navigate her way through Dissocia, a fantastic wonderland full of surprises and weird, wonderful, and frightening inhabitants.
Away from Dissocia, life is very different. In Dissocia, Lisa is the decider of her own fate. Back at home, she’s not.
This is a riotous, wonderful, wild-ride of a play. As playwright Anthony Neilson said, “If you like Alice in Wonderland but there’s not enough sex and violence in it, then Dissocia is the show for you.”

Age is not a big factor for casting, but there are adult themes, including violence, implied off-stage sexual assault, and use of ‘adult’ language, so audiences and auditionees are advised to consider these potentially disturbing contents before attending auditions or performances.

Repeated Fieldset #:4
Role Information: The cast consists of 7 actors, each playing multiple roles, besides Lisa who will be played by a single actress.
The role of Lisa has already been cast.ROLES AVAILABLE: (in order of appearance)
Age, gender, and ethnicity are not relevant for casting, except for the roles of Vince and Dot, who will need to be played by a male and female respectively, both within the stage age range of 25-35 years.

Victor: A strange Swiss watchmaker. Swiss or RP English accent required.
Passengers: There are a few of these to be doubled by actors. Speaking and non-speaking. All weird and funny in their own way.
Guard 1: Perhaps one of the two funniest characters in the play. Must be able to convey a lack of confidence and indecision.
Guard 2: Similar to Guard 1. These two must be able to play off and work with one another well. Great comedic timing is needed for both Guards.
Oathtaker: Has two modes – stentorian, and bored out of their mind. An imposing figure, but needs great comedic abilities.
Oathtaker attendants: Will double. Musical ability would be great, but not necessary.
Goat: Probably the ‘worst’ character in the first act, if not the entire play. A scary figure, who also needs to be able to be funny, before turning toward terrifying.
Jane: Female identifying actor required. Requires good comedic sensibilities.
Bear: Loveable. Wears a costume. Must be able to sing.
Britney: Essentially a bogan. Funny. Absurd.
Laughter: Speaking. Comedic timing needed.
Ticket: Speaking. Comedic timing needed.
Argument: Speaking. Comedic timing needed.
Inhibitions: Speaking. Comedic timing needed.
Biffer: Non-speaking, but makes some ‘noises.’ Comedic timing, again, is needed.
Violinist: If you can play the violin, that’s great. If you have a violin, that’s even better! Neither of these is necessary, though.
Nurses x3: There are 3 nurses in the second act. Each will be played by a different actor, and each have different personality traits. Gender irrelevant.
Dr Clark: A Doctor. Gender irrelevant.
Dr Faraday: A Doctor. Gender irrelevant.
Dot: Lisa’s sister. Empathetic but frustrated. Can come across as heartless, or despondent. An important character to be suggestively doubled. Stage age 25-35. Female identifying.
Vince: Lisa’s boyfriend. A pivotal role. Like Dot, Vince is frustrated, and has difficulty understanding why he’s being ‘mistreated.’ Another character caught between being empathetic and a prick. Must have both an imposing quality, and a sensitivity to him. Stage age 25-35. Male identifying.

Singing and other musical abilities are not required by any means, but do mention if you have them.
