Character Information:
Richard Hannay (male, mid-thirties, 387 cues)
Described in the script as “thirty-seven years of age, about six foot one [185cm],with dark, wavy hair, piercing blue eyes, and a very attractive pencil thin moustache”, Hannay is a confirmed bachelor, bored, initially self-absorbed, but ultimately honest and decent. The book defines him as Scottish (his surname clearly is) though Hitchcock’s movie has him as a Canadian. He speaks British English with the accent of ‘received pronunciation’ (RP).
Annabella / Pamela / Margaret (female, twenties-thirties, 245 cues, 3 characters)
Annabella and Pamela are both confident, strong, single women, who refuse to put up with any nonsense, particularly from a man. Margaret is more innocent, intrigued by Hannay’s world experiences in contrast to her sheltered Scottish upbringing. Annabella speaks with an Eastern European accent; Pamela’s is RP British English; Margaret’s is Scottish, between Glaswegian and Highlands.
Clowns 1 and 2 (non-specific gender or age, 193 & 235 cues, 12 & 11 characters)
The two Clowns will physically adapt to the various characters throughout the play, being able to adjust several dimensions of their portrayal through a scene (some scenes they play more than one role, the most complex requiring multiple switching between four characters). The actors should be able to adopt English, Scottish, and European accents, and portray characters of both and/or non-specific genders. Characters include police, underwear sales people, cleaning staff, railway employees, gang heavies and bosses, a Scottish farmer, and a married couple running an isolated hotel in Scotland.
Foley Artist / Announcer (non-specific gender or age, 4 spoken cues, 1 character)
We need you to create the sound effects live, during the play. Some of these will be digitally recorded and you’ll be pushing a button to trigger it; others will require the use of physical objects, to create the effect we need. We need someone with creativity, rhythm and dexterity. In addition, we want your voice, as an announcer, for British radio, and in a London theatre.
Creative and Crew
We’re also looking for others to join our creative team in props, set construction, costume making, and sound design; and our production management team for stage management, backstage crew, and technical operators (lighting and video).
