Anna Larsen journeys from Norway to Chicago with her mother and sister, seeking new beginnings in the bustling American city. There, she meets Horatio Spafford—a respected lawyer—and their friendship grows into love, culminating in a heartfelt marriage.
The Spafford family, grounded in faith and community, endures the catastrophic Great Chicago Fire, which decimates most of Horatio’s real estate investments and changes their financial circumstances. Despite their efforts to rebuild in the aftermath, financial recovery remains difficult, adding stress and uncertainty to their lives.
Eventually, for respite and with the intention of helping with revival meetings in England, Anna and their four daughters set sail while Horatio stays behind to address urgent business. Tragedy strikes at sea—the S.S. Ville du Havre sinks, and Anna alone survives, sending Horatio the harrowing telegram: “Saved alone.” Overcome by grief, Horatio travels to meet Anna and, while crossing the site of the shipwreck, finds inspiration to write the hymn “It Is Well with My Soul”.
Anna and Horatio slowly learn how to overcome such a huge loss by leaning on each other, their friends, and their faith.
