‘When one is in love, one begins by deceiving oneself. And one ends by deceiving others. That is what the world calls a romance.’
Oscar Wilde’s classic comedy is set in the stuffy world of Hunstanton manor, circa late 1800s England, with its lush countryside and decrepit inhabitants. Gerald Arbuthnot is about to become secretary to the charming, roguish Lord Illingworth.
In the middle of Wilde’s timeless witticisms and satire is a terrible secret involving Rachel, Gerald’s loving but protective mother, and as it comes to light, Wilde shows why after all these years no other playwright balances drama and comedy with such finesse.
