At exactly 8.00pm on March 5th, 2009, Broadway theatres dimmed their lights to celebrate the life of one of America’s greatest theatrical treasures, Horton Foote.

Horton Foote was an esteemed American playwright and screenwriter. His deeply evocative narratives, often set against the backdrop of the American South, capture the complexities of human relationships and the pervasive sense of longing. Foote’s profound connection to his roots is vividly portrayed in his most celebrated work, The Trip to Bountiful, where nostalgia and loss are explored with gentle clarity.

Awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1995 for The Young Man From Atlanta, his storytelling mastery was also showcased through screenwriting. He won two Academy Awards for his scripts for To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) and Tender Mercies (1983). His subtle, yet powerful dialogue and deep character insights offered audiences a mirror to their own lives and choices.

Foote’s legacy, marked by a career spanning over six decades, left an indelible mark on American theatre and cinema. He left behind a treasure trove of plays and films that continue to resonate deeply.

Following their critically acclaimed production of Horton Foote’s Dividing The Estate in 2019, Red Phoenix Theatre is absolutely thrilled to be presenting Foote’s wonderful play, The Trip to Bountiful.

Horton Foote’s The Trip to Bountiful captures the deeply emotional journey of Carrie Watts, an elderly woman constrained in a stifling Houston apartment with her overbearing daughter-in-law and passive son. Yearning for her cherished childhood home of Bountiful, Texas, Carrie seizes an unexpected chance to escape. Her journey back to Bountiful becomes a poignant quest for freedom, identity, and closure, illuminating her indomitable spirit and the universal desire to return to one’s roots.
