A small but most appreciative audience gathered at the Gumeracha Town Hall to join the fun of this most recent TOTT light comedy. It's an established recipe and clearly meets the community's needs and expectations. Director David Evans and his cast made a good fist of the comic scenario and there was no shortage of enthusiasm on stage.
The set was simple and well-devised for the play, nicely suited to the travelling needs of the group, playing as they do in both Mount Pleasant and Gumeracha.
In this combination of a talent quest and Phantom of the Opera, the cast kept the unlikely melodramatic story line going quite well. Kate Farrer put her heart into the role of the most talented contestant, Christina, and her experience and sense of ensemble were important to the action. Playing opposite her, Danny Ashford showed real promise as The Phantom, his first ever stage role. His strong voice and presence made for an effective debut.
The judging panel, led by Robert Lucas as the chief judge, provided much of the comedy of the play, and although he kept the prompt busy at times, he maintained focus and provided a good contrast to the more ethical characters. Mo Johnson as Carly, the diva, and Andrew Minge in his roles as two of the judges had some striking moments, while Tahnee Mueller and Elaine Miller as the young chorus girls, were lively and natural.
The performance was bright, enjoyable and inspired much positive, even rowdy, reaction.
