Matt Byrne is at it again. The promotion of theatre in Adelaide is very near and dear to his heart and whenever he has the opportunity to do said promotion he grabs it with open arms. The Adelaide Fringe is the perfect vehicle for him and the rest of Adelaide to be part of unique theatre. Matt being an accomplished, well-seasoned writer pens a lively and enthusiastic production each and every year for the The Adelaide Fringe.
This year’s offering is The Luv Boat Yes it’s a direct spoof of the 1970’s television sitcom of a similar name and has some extremely recognisable characters. Matt Byrne plays Captain Obvious, Marc Clement is Nerfus Wreck, Kim York a very disillusioned Butterfly United and finally Stefanie Rossi is Sammy Voyage (short for Salmonella). Each of these actors portrays numerous characters and some are hysterically funny. Nothing is sacred to Matt and he takes extreme pleasure in highlighting every stereotype you can imagine from ageing rockers only fit for Cruise Entertainment, Politicians, Pirates, Poms, Yanks and of course our nearest and dearest the Kiwis. We cannot forget of course the passengers on this cruise, our geriatrics. They may not remember how to do Luv, but are positive they want it with some hilarious results. The music tracks used all bring back fond memories and the little interlude showcasing songs sung wrong is also a little close to the bone (pun definitely intended).
Whilst there were a few technical issues on opening night, these will definitely be ironed out and certainly did not detract from the stupendous performance from all four actors. Their skill and experience made for an extremely funny and entertaining night. Theming of the show must also be mentioned. From the time you walk in the door and are greeted with a Lei, being piped on board and the friendly service at the shipboard bar all added to the atmosphere. I can definitely recommend the Peach Bellini.
The Luv Boat steams ahead from now until 13th March at Maxim’s Wine Bar in Norwood. Do yourself a favour and get on board.
