Familiar characters include Nanki Poo\, Yum Yum\, The Lord High Executioner Ko Ko\, Katisha\, and of course the emperor Mikado himself. \nIn typical G&S style\, a tangled web is woven and unravels\, and everyone lives happily ever after. Witty comedy\, memorable tunes\, a little romance\, and endearing characters\, along with some light-hearted contemporary references\, make this satirical piece of musical theatre a popular favourite to this day.

Her son\, Strephon (Aled Proeve)\, wants to marry Phyllis (Danielle Ruggiero-Prior)\, a ward of Chancery\, but all of the peers have the same aim.  The Lord Chancellor (Damon Hill) is her guardian\, but is unwilling to make a choice\, and Phyllis rejects all the peers.  The peers\, led by Tolloller (Benjamin Fleming) and Mountararat (Graham Loveday)\, with Phyllis\, see Strephon embracing his mother (fairies remain excessively young) and accuses him of infidelity. \nA host of fairies\, including Rebecca Kmit (the Queen)\, Rhiannon Curtis (Celia)\, Alex Fowler (Leila) and Rachel Lee (Fleta) begin to fall in love with the peers\, while Private Willis (Jason Clark)\, on guard at the Palace of Westminster\, reflects on political life before falling for the Queen of the fairies.  A chorus of fairies\, dryads\, brownies\, pixies\, mushrooms and peers complete a stunning cast. \nLike all of the Savoy Operas\, Iolanthe is full of the delightful music of Sullivan and the biting wit of Gilbert. SUMMARY:The Merry Widow
DESCRIPTION:Set in the Pontevedrian Embassy in Paris in 1880\, the show opens at a colourful ball hosted by the pompous middle-aged ambassador\, Baron Zeta (baritone\, David Roberts).  The fate of their country is in the hands of the widow Madame Glavari (soprano\, Kendall Geisler)\, a simple country girl who married a wealthy banker and\, on his death\, inherited his twenty millions.  If she marries a foreigner and takes her money out of the country then Pontevedro will be bankrupt.  From the beginning\, foreign diplomats\, St Brioche (Bob Daniel) and Cascada (Christian Pollnitz)\, lead a contingent of men vying for the hand of the widow. \nTo save the day the Baron calls on his attaché\, Count Danilo Danilovitch (baritone\, Toby Gajewski) to woo her.  However\, unbeknown to the Baron\, this handsome playboy is already in love with her\, but having previously been forbidden from marrying the lowly country girl\, he is less than enthusiastic.  Intrigues at the embassy between Baron Zeta’s wife\, Valencienne (soprano\, Kaila Barton)\, and the aristocratic Frenchman Count de Rosillon (tenor\, Anthony Little) complicate the situation further. \nThe Merry Widow abounds with delightful music\, from the ever-popular Merry Widow Waltz\, to the lively Women! Women! Women!\, the comic Driving in the Park and\, perhaps the best known of all\, Vilia\, making it one of the most loved operettas of all.  The Newry Studio of Irish Dance provide a delightful sextet of Grisettes (dancers from Maxim’s) to entertain guests. SUMMARY:The Merry Widow
DESCRIPTION:Set in the Pontevedrian Embassy in Paris in 1880\, the show opens at a colourful ball hosted by the pompous middle-aged ambassador\, Baron Zeta (baritone\, David Roberts).  The fate of their country is in the hands of the widow Madame Glavari (soprano\, Kendall Geisler)\, a simple country girl who married a wealthy banker and\, on his death\, inherited his twenty millions.  If she marries a foreigner and takes her money out of the country then Pontevedro will be bankrupt.  From the beginning\, foreign diplomats\, St Brioche (Bob Daniel) and Cascada (Christian Pollnitz)\, lead a contingent of men vying for the hand of the widow. \nTo save the day the Baron calls on his attaché\, Count Danilo Danilovitch (baritone\, Toby Gajewski) to woo her.  However\, unbeknown to the Baron\, this handsome playboy is already in love with her\, but having previously been forbidden from marrying the lowly country girl\, he is less than enthusiastic.  Intrigues at the embassy between Baron Zeta’s wife\, Valencienne (soprano\, Kaila Barton)\, and the aristocratic Frenchman Count de Rosillon (tenor\, Anthony Little) complicate the situation further. \nThe Merry Widow abounds with delightful music\, from the ever-popular Merry Widow Waltz\, to the lively Women! Women! Women!\, the comic Driving in the Park and\, perhaps the best known of all\, Vilia\, making it one of the most loved operettas of all.  The Newry Studio of Irish Dance provide a delightful sextet of Grisettes (dancers from Maxim’s) to entertain guests.
