SUMMARY:Blue Stockings by Jessica Swale
DESCRIPTION:Cambridge 1896\, and Girton College is home to the country’s first female students. Blue Stockings is the empowering and surprising story of four young women fighting for their right to a university education in a world that assumed women belonged at home. \nA gloriously moving\, comical and eye-opening story of four young women fighting for education and self-determination against the larger backdrop of women’s suffrage. This year’s intake of new women at Girton College face economic difficulty\, the distractions of men and radical politics\, and the jaw-dropping prejudice that blights every aspect of academic life. Meanwhile\, there looms the prospect of a controversial vote to decide: should these ‘blue stockings’ be allowed to graduate? The play begins with text from an actual speech by ‘real life’ Dr Maudsley who warns his audience that education for women is a dangerous idea. He argues that women’s lives should be determined by their biological and reproductive functions\, and therefore attending university is likely to cause them serious harm. \nFirst produced at Shakespeare’s Globe in 2013 it was a sell-out success. Based on feedback we’ve received so far\, we fully expect this to also be a sell-out season. So don’t miss out. \nDirected by Libby Drake and featuring a wonderful cast including Kate Anolak\, Laura Antoniazzi\, Jackson Barnard\, Kyla Booth\, Matt Chapman\, Bart Csorba\, Brant Eustice\, James Fazzalari\, Lucy Johnson\, Rebecca Kemp\, Jasmine Leech\, David Lockwood\, Tony Sampson\, Sebastien Skubala\, Tom Tassone\, Kate van der Horst and Rosie Williams.

SUMMARY:The Day the Internet Died | How to Survive Being in a Shakespeare Play
DESCRIPTION:The Day the Internet Died \nby Ian McWethy & Jason Pizzarello \nA devastating occurrence happens to a small town. No\, it’s not famine\, or floods\, or loss of your basic rights. The internet has gone down! And it will continue to be down! For a week! A whole week! Pandemonium! In a world that is so dependent on the internet for shopping\, mailing\, and posting pictures of cute babies\, how will society function? Not well as it turns out. The Day the Internet Died hilariously explores how inept we are at dating\, research\, and basic human interactions when we don’t have a screen to look at. \nPLUS \nHow to Survive Being in a Shakespeare Play \nby Don Zolidis \nSome day it’s going to happen: You’re going to find yourself on stage\, wearing tights\, and saying things in iambic pentameter. Face it\, you’re in a Shakespeare play\, and that means it’s a pretty good bet you’re going to DIE. The Bard is out for blood\, but this play is here to stop him! How could Romeo and Juliet survive? Julius Caesar? A nameless soldier in Henry the Fifth? What if King Lear had an emotional support llama and didn’t need to make terrible mistakes? Join us in discovering how a dozen of Shakespeare’s plays could’ve turned out differently! If only they listened…

SUMMARY:Shakespeare in the Bar
DESCRIPTION:Butterfly Theatre began in 2013 with Boston Marriage in the Feast Festival and has produced 1 – 2 plays each year. From 2013 – 2019 we joined forces with The Wheatsheaf Hotel who were our resident base for our Beer Theatre productions but in 2020 we relocated to Holden Street Theatres producing our immersive style of theatre at The Studio in the critically acclaimed Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? \nShakespeare in the Bar evolved out of a merging of Butterfly Theatre’s ethos of the importance of the place and space for performance – matching the play to the venue – in this case the Box Bar at Holden Street Theatres. Director Tony Knight explains – ‘‘Bard at the Bar’\, and ‘Have a Beer with Will’ were amongst those we considered for the title of this show. What they all reflect\, however\, is the desire to do an informal presentation of speeches from Shakespeare’s plays; and in a way directly engage with an audience. This kind of raw ‘unplugged’ intimate immediacy was very much an element in the original performances of these speeches – the audience was an active presence and participant in the action’. With regard to the narrative – “The ‘Platt’ (or ‘plot’) was a parchment theatre document that was hung up backstage in the Elizabethan and Jacobean theatres. It listed the ‘running order’ of the play in performance – scene by scene. Each scene contained the names of the characters in the scene\, and sometimes the names of the actors – such as Richard Burbage\, who was Shakespeare’s actor and was the first to play many of the roles that will appear tonight. This particular ‘platt’\, however\, is not driven by character nor play. \nThis is a ‘platt’ connected and interlinked by themes. These respective speeches have been taken out of context and placed within a different narrative associated with 5 major themes and subject-matters in Shakespeare’s plays. Whilst honouring original intentions\, nonetheless\, each speech tells its own story\, weaving its own dramatic spell. Essentially\, they are virtually all dramatic journey’s from a state of ‘uncertainty’ to ‘certainty’; from a question that may or may not be answered. It is\, as Harold Bloom noted\, as if we are overhearing and listening to ‘tic-toc’ of someone’s thinking” \nShakespeare in the Bar … Produced by Butterfly Theatre … directed by Tony Knight.\nPlayers: Leah Lowe\, Bronwyn Ruciak\, Russell Slater\, Andrew Smith\nFeaturing original musical composition by Alan John. Musical Direction by Jodie O’Regan

SUMMARY:The Odd Couple
DESCRIPTION:MBM’s The Odd Couple locks down at Holden Street\nNeil Simon classic gets theatre back in gear at Hindmarsh\nMatt Byrne Media will put a smile on everyone’s dial with Neil Simon’s classic comedy The Odd Couple at Holden Street Theatres from November 4 to 28. \nProducer Matt Byrne says The Odd Couple began on Broadway back in 1965 with Art Carney as neat freak Felix and Walter Matthau as the irascible Oscar. \nMatthau then paired with Jack Lemmon in the Oscar nominated movie version\, and Jack Klugman and Tony Randall carried the fractured friendship further forward to Emmy winning glory in the five-year TV version. \nThe MBM production features David Grybowski as Felix and Byrne as Oscar. \n“David and I have worked together on great shows like the award-winning Driving Miss Daisy\, Same Time Next Year\, Reservoir Dogs and especially Twelve Angry Men\,” Byrne said. \n“It’s wonderful to playing opposite him again\, and I’m delighted to have another long time theatre colleague Rose Vallen co-directing the show with me.” \nByrne said The Odd Couple\, set in 1960s New York\, was Neil Simon’s greatest play. \n“Trouble erupts when divorced sportswriter Oscar Madison and separated TV producer Felix Ungar end up living together in Oscar’s Manhattan apartment\,” he said. \n“It’s an hysterically funny but equally poignant look at male bonding and the ties that grind. \n“Easy-going Oscar’s place which hosts a weekly card game is a disorganised mess. So when finicky Felix moves in he can’t help but try and straighten it out – it’s a recipe for disaster.” \n“Poker buddies Murray (Timothy Cousins)\, Speed (Gavin Cianci)\, Vinnie (Russell Ford) and Roy (Frank Cwiertniak) get caught in the crossfire. \n“Oscar then sets up a double date with the riotous Pigeon Sisters\, Gwendolyn (Bec Mason) and Cecily (Lauren Weber) but Felix can’t forget his wife.” \nThe Odd Couple runs at The Studio at Holden Street Theatres at 34 Holden Street\, Hindmarsh from November 4 ($20 Preview) 5-7\, 11-14\, 18-21 & 25-28 at 7.30 p.m. and November 14\, 21 & 28 at 1.30 p.m. Admission is Adults $30 and Concessions $28 with Group Concessions $28/$26 for 10 or more.
