SUMMARY:Wrong Turn at Lungfish
DESCRIPTION:Synopsis\nSet in a New York City hospital\, Wrong Turn at Lungfish is the story of Peter Ravenswaal\, a blind\, bitter and widowed college professor\, and his encounter with Anita\, a saucy\, street wise young woman who volunteers to read to him in the hospital. He’s irascible and ill-mannered\, she’s uneducated but resilient; she’s a superstitious Catholic\, he’s a supercilious Protestant.\nHe’s a widower facing death alone\, she’s the mistreated lover of a low-rent mob enforcer named Dominic. By the end of the play\, the clash of intellect and wit takes the two from animosity and fear to friendship and understanding.\nBy the way\, “lungfish” refers to a primitive fish species\, representing a metaphor for a point in evolution where humans could have taken a different path\, potentially without developing such complex brains. \nWritten by : Garry Marshall & Lowell Ganz\nDirected by : Rosie Aust

SUMMARY:The Sorcerer
DESCRIPTION:by Gilbert & Sullivan \nDirected by Bronwyn Calvett\nMD John Wilson \nFIVE SHOWS ONLY ! \n‘The Sorcerer’ is the tale of how with the best of intentions Alexis\, an English aristocrat in the village of Ploverleigh\, through the use of a love potion from an old firm of London magicians\, J. Wells & Co.\, Family Sorcerers\, gets all sorts of unlikely people to fall madly in love with one another.\nUnfortunately for Alexis\, this includes his fiancée\, Aline\, who falls for the elderly vicar Dr. Daly. Chaos ensues in the village\, and after many typical Gilbert and Sullivan style comic twists and turns all is eventually happily resolved.\nWell … almost ! \n‘The Sorcerer’ made its debut in 1877 and was the first Gilbert and Sullivan collaboration in which the two had complete control of the production. It was highly successful for its time\, which encouraged them to continue working together and expand the possibilities of satiric operetta. ‘The Sorcerer’ introduced such well known Gilbert and Sullivan trademarks as the comic duet\, the patter song\, the contrapuntal double chorus\, the tenor and soprano love duet and the soprano showpiece aria that we see in other shows to follow.\nThe Sorcerer also introduced W. S. Gilbert’s passion for satirizing the excessive focus of the English on class differences with a plot that turns the entire social order upside down.

SUMMARY:Lilac Time
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE:  New venue and new start time for evening performances \nThe South Australian Light Opera Society is delighted to present our latest operetta\, Lilac Time\, at the Domain Theatre in the Marion Cultural Centre.  Because our usual venue is undergoing repairs\, we have had to change to a new venue and change the dates of our shows for this year.  We will also be changing the starting time for our evening performances to 7:30 pm\, meaning an earlier night for everyone.  Matinees will remain at 2:00 pm. \nLilac Time is set in Vienna in 1820 and is based loosely on the life of composer Franz Schubert\, played by Andrew McKinnon.  Schubert and his playboy friend\, Baron Schober (Frikkie Jacobs) are vying for the attention of Mitzi (Katrin Treloar)\, the youngest daughter of glassmaker\, Otto Zell (David Roberts)\, and his wife (Bronwyn Calvett). \nSchubert’s friends\, Kuppell (Andrew Winter)\, Schwind (Peter Muller) and Vogl (Christian Pollnitz) enjoy the fine Vienna weather and food at every opportunity.  Meanwhile\, Mitzi’s sisters\, Fritzi (Kathy Cilento) and Litzi (Carmine Clarke) are keen to marry their boyfriends\, Binder (Bob Daniel) and Brun (Phil Rodda).  Complications follow with the arrival of temperamental prima donna\, Taliani (Kendall Geisler)\, at a party to celebrate the ‘double wedding\,’ out to catch her philandering paramour\, Schober. \nBeautiful music written by Schubert himself has been adapted for our enjoyment to such songs as Hark\, Hark the Lark\, A Song to Remember\, Jolly Good Fellows and Lilac Time in this entertaining operetta.  Costumes of the period complete the scene as the story evolves in old Vienna. \nLilac Time is Directed by Pam Tucker with Musical Direction by Helen Loveday. \nFurther information is available from Pam Tucker at 8294 6582

SUMMARY:OF GOOD STOCK
DESCRIPTION:Synopsis of this South Australian premiere “dramedy” :\nThe three Stockton sisters (Jess\, Amy and Celia) are witty\, brilliant\, beautiful\, and dysfunctional. When their father\, legendary novelist Mick Stockton died\, he left his three daughters a house in Cape Cod\, control over his books\, and a whole lot of issues. He was a Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist who had many affairs\, and their mother died young\, and it’s left them all pretty messed up. It’s Jess’s 41st birthday and she and her husband Fred have invited her younger sisters to their house on Cape Cod to celebrate. It’s an important milestone for Jess: she’s surpassing the age of her mother\, who died from cancer years ago. Amy is joined by her fiancé\, Josh. Celia\, the youngest\, brings Hunter\, her boyfriend. Their reunion ignites passions\, humour\, and wildly unanticipated upheavals. The men struggle to be a part of this elusive family’s legacy. Of Good Stock is a raw\, poignant\, and hilarious look at the fun and dysfunction of that thing we call family.
