It is 1950’s Britain and working class, underemployed Jimmy Porter is angry and frustrated at society’s entrenched class consciousness, which he believes denies him opportunity and dignity.
Despite the disapproval by his upper-middle class parents-in-law towards his marriage to their daughter Alison, Jimmy lives a volatile existence with her in a rundown boarding house. Workmate and fellow tenant, Jimmy’s Welsh friend Cliff often acts as the couple’s peacemaker. With the arrival of Alison’s sophisticated friend Helena, explosive and life-changing events ensue.
Said to have spawned the term ‘The Angry Young Man’, this 1956 play is just as relevant today due to its enduring themes that include poverty, the stifling of opportunity by establishment society, family conflict, misogyny and unresolved grief.
