SUMMARY:Angels In America
DESCRIPTION:ANGELS IN AMERICA:\nA Gay Fantasia on National Themes \nPart One: Millennium Approaches\nAND\nPart Two: Perestroika \nWRITTEN BY TONY KUSHNER \nDirected by Hayley Horton \n2 – 25 May 2024 \nAn exciting\, epic production in two parts\, Angels in America is a complex\, metaphorical and symbolic examination of sexuality in America in the 1980s by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning playwright Tony Kushner (Munich\, Lincoln\, Fences\, The Fablemans). \nThe West End revival production won the Olivier Award for Best Revival in 2018\, and was screened as part of the National Theatre Live cinematic release. Later that year the production transferred to Broadway\, where it received eleven Tony Award nominations\, the most ever received by a play at the time. It won three: Best Revival of a Play; Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Play\, for Andrew Garfield; and Best Actor in a Featured Role in a Play\, for Nathan Lane. \nIn Part 1\, Millennium Approaches\, Prior Walter is HIV positive. His Jewish boyfriend leaves him for a straight Mormon and he gets a hospital visit from an angel who says it is up to him to save humanity. While in Part 2\, Perestroika\, various forces have gathered in New York: the ex-boyfriend and his Mormon lover\, the pill-popping ex-wife\, the conservative mother\, a rabid Republican lawyer\, a drag queen and a dead activist… and Prior has the future of the world in his hands. \nFull of humour and hope\, these diverse characters captivate audiences in its contemplation of humanity and our progress towards a new millennium. It is spectacular\, yet intimate. It is magical\, yet grounded in reality. With Kushner’s erudite writing and some of Adelaide theatre’s most talented performers\, Angels in America is a theatre event not to be missed. \nDirector Hayley Horton says\, “Despite the exploration of humanity and all its flaws\, this is a hilarious script. We laugh more than we cry and it is almost cathartic to see the more upsetting parts of our world through a humorous lens. It just showcases Kushner’s skills as a writer to have 3 hours feel like nothing\, while laughing at how broken the world really can be.\nI love the hopefulness of this piece. While many could just watch Part 1 and live with the cliffhanger\, it is the resolution of Part 2 that gives us hope – where the good survive to see the new millennium born.” \nCAST\nKate Anolak\, Lee Cook\, Rachel Dalton\, Brant Eustice\, Matt Houston\, Casmira Lorien\, Eric McDowell and Lindsay Prodea. \nCONTENT WARNING\nPlease be advised this production contains frequent strong language\, adult themes\, sexual references and nudity. \nDURATION\nAngels in America is a two-part play\, presented in two halves over two separate performances.\nYou can order tickets to both Parts in one booking.\nEach Part will run approximately 3 hours with 2 intervals each. \nVENUE\nLittle Theatre\nUniversity of Adelaide (The Cloisters)

DESCRIPTION:Written By: By Arrangement with David Spicer Productions www.davidspicer.com.au Music and Lyrics by Peter Allen. Book by Nick Enright Original Production by Ben Gannon and Robert Fox \nCreative Team: DIRECTOR: Selena Britz\nMUSICAL DIRECTOR: Jane Feast\nCHOREOGRAPHER: Carmel Vistoli \n\nThe Boy From Oz is the most successful Australian musical ever and the first to make it to Broadway. It is a musical biography/tribute to the late great Peter Allen. Peter Allen was born in the outback Australian town of Tenterfield in 1944. He made his entertainment debut at the age of 5 impersonating Al Jolson. As a teenager he became a pop star and then toured Asia. There he met Judy Garland who took him to London where he met and become engaged to her daughter Liza Minnelli. In the US Peter enjoyed the highs of success by winning an Oscar\, selling out performances in Radio City Music Hall\, and receiving adulation when he returned to Australia. There were also plenty of lows … breaking up with his wife\, staging a Broadway flop\, the death of his partner and his own battle with illness. Peter Allen had an extraordinary life which producer Ben Gannon realized had the potential to become a magnificent musical and with Robert Fox they turned it into the smash hit it became. \nThe Boy From Oz is a class above all other ‘jukebox’ musicals. The late Nick Enright skillfully weaved his plot around the life and complexities of Peter Allen. The songs and lyrics sit easily with the rhythm of the piece and with the characters as they enter and re-enter his life\, be they dead or alive. It leaps\, as does Peter himself\, from past to present and back to past all within the familiar context of one of his energy-packed concerts.

SUMMARY:Lilac Time
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE:  New venue and new start time for evening performances \nThe South Australian Light Opera Society is delighted to present our latest operetta\, Lilac Time\, at the Domain Theatre in the Marion Cultural Centre.  Because our usual venue is undergoing repairs\, we have had to change to a new venue and change the dates of our shows for this year.  We will also be changing the starting time for our evening performances to 7:30 pm\, meaning an earlier night for everyone.  Matinees will remain at 2:00 pm. \nLilac Time is set in Vienna in 1820 and is based loosely on the life of composer Franz Schubert\, played by Andrew McKinnon.  Schubert and his playboy friend\, Baron Schober (Frikkie Jacobs) are vying for the attention of Mitzi (Katrin Treloar)\, the youngest daughter of glassmaker\, Otto Zell (David Roberts)\, and his wife (Bronwyn Calvett). \nSchubert’s friends\, Kuppell (Andrew Winter)\, Schwind (Peter Muller) and Vogl (Christian Pollnitz) enjoy the fine Vienna weather and food at every opportunity.  Meanwhile\, Mitzi’s sisters\, Fritzi (Kathy Cilento) and Litzi (Carmine Clarke) are keen to marry their boyfriends\, Binder (Bob Daniel) and Brun (Phil Rodda).  Complications follow with the arrival of temperamental prima donna\, Taliani (Kendall Geisler)\, at a party to celebrate the ‘double wedding\,’ out to catch her philandering paramour\, Schober. \nBeautiful music written by Schubert himself has been adapted for our enjoyment to such songs as Hark\, Hark the Lark\, A Song to Remember\, Jolly Good Fellows and Lilac Time in this entertaining operetta.  Costumes of the period complete the scene as the story evolves in old Vienna. \nLilac Time is Directed by Pam Tucker with Musical Direction by Helen Loveday. \nFurther information is available from Pam Tucker at 8294 6582
