SUMMARY:Macbeth (or) When Shall We Three Meet Again?
DESCRIPTION:Do you trust me? \nFollowing the success of The Motherf**ker with the Gun in July 2018\, the Theatre Guild is delighted to present a second student production in this our 80th anniversary year\, featuring\nanother two of Adelaide’s fine young actors supported by an enthusiastic and committed team of students backstage and front of house. \nIn this bold one-act adaptation\, Shakespeare’s classic is reimagined as a domestic drama with a couple\, alone in a modern-day bedroom. Left with nothing but themselves – their laughter\, their love\, their loneliness – they confront the pain of the past and the futility of any future. \nBut how do they deal with loss as their lives spiral out of control? Grieving makes way for tragedy as they struggle to hold onto a normal life. Director and writer James Watson is currently studying for a Bachelor of Creative Arts (Creative Writing) at Flinders University.\nHe has been writing plays and been involved in theatre since high school where he was the Drama Captain in his senior year. In 2016 James was the winner of the State Theatre Company of South Australia Young Playwrights’ Award and also wrote the double bill Domestic Autumn and Angry Love for the Theatre Guild. In 2017 he wrote and directed Empty Vanity for the Adelaide Fringe. \nJames said “I wanted to reinterpret the line ‘When shall we three meet again’ and my mantra was ‘versus Shakespeare’. What could I do that was different yet recognisable enough to maintain this tale of tragedy? Minimalist and fragmented\, this production retaliates against traditional productions of Shakespeare.”

SUMMARY:Man of La Mancha
DESCRIPTION:Miguel de Cervantes\, aging and an utter failure as playwright\, poet and tax collector\, has been thrown into a dungeon in Seville to await trial by the Inquisition for an offense against the Church. There he is dragged before a kangaroo court of his fellow prisoners\, who plan to confiscate his few possessions—including the incomplete manuscript of a novel\, Don Quixote. Cervantes\, seeking to save the manuscript\, proposes his defense in the form of a play. The “court” agrees\, and Cervantes and his manservant don make-up and costumes\, transforming themselves into Don Quixote and Sancho Panza. They then play out the story with the prisoners taking the roles of other characters.\nQuixote and Sancho take to the road in a quest to restore the age of chivalry\, battle all evil\, and right all wrongs.\nThe mad Don Quixote may think a windmill to be a giant and a tavern to be a castle\, but along the way he also transforms a wretched woman into a beautiful lady – and proves that an old man’s belief can truly make him a knight. Man of La Mancha features such stirring songs as “Dulcinea” and the now-famous standard\, “Quest” – more famously known as “The Impossible Dream.”

SUMMARY:And Then There Were None
DESCRIPTION:A night of mystery\, manipulation and murder \nAgatha Christie’s And Then There Were None remains the world’s most read mystery novel\, and one of the top ten best selling novels of all time\, with over 100 million copies sold since its first publication in 1939. This November\, the Adelaide Rep will be bringing this classic tale to the stage\, working from a script by the grand dame of crime herself\, which contains some deliciously wicked twists and turns exclusive to the theatrical experience! \nTen strangers\, with apparently nothing in common\, each receive an “invitation” from a sinister blackmailer\, compelling them to spend the night in a remote mansion on an island off the coast of Devon. Upon arrival\, they hear a recording of their unseen host\, accusing each guest of concealing a guilty secret and threatening violent retribution for their sins. The onset of a raging storm ensures that the innocent and guilty alike are completely cut off from contact with the mainland\, trapped like rats in a maze devised a diabolical criminal genius\, with murder on his mind… and unlike in other Agatha Christie stories\, there is no heroic sleuth on hand to stop this deadly game from playing itself out\, so all the characters are forced to confront the darkest parts of their own natures in order to stand a chance of survival. \nAnd Then There Were None boasts an eclectic ensemble of Adelaide’s finest amateur thespians\, showcasing both established veterans of the stage and emerging new talent. Sharp direction\, combined with striking light and sound effects\, combine to create a grippingly suspenseful ambience. A nail-biting\, edge of the seat night out at the theatre! \nDirector Adrian Barnes is an award-winning performer\, who started his professional career in the UK after training at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. He’s worked professionally worldwide since 1969\, is an honorary member of The MEAA\, has worked in The West End\, in every capital city in Australia\, taught at prestigious theatre schools around the world and has acted alongside renowned actors like Cate Blanchette and Richard Roxburgh.

SUMMARY:Alice in Wonderland
DESCRIPTION:This new version on Alice in Wonderland is so close to the original in intention and feeling that you might suspect that Carroll himself had written it. And yet\, it includes many unusual and imaginative staging devices. A group of performers seeks out Alice in order to provide “her turn” in Wonderland. And\, as her adventure unfolds\, they play the many characters she encounters and grows to love. A joy to see and hear.

SUMMARY:Look Homeward\, Angel
DESCRIPTION:What is it about great sprawling family sagas that continues to enthral readers and audiences?\nIf Tim Winton’s Cloudstreet has become the great Australian family-story\, then Thomas Wolfe’s mighty 1929 novel is its American forebear.\nBoth tell the story of large crazy families living in unruly old houses. Both trace the attempts of children to escape their families\, while\, at the same time\, finding themselves drawn back into the circle. And both do it with great compassion and a rich layer of humour.\nThomas Wolfe was a larger-than-life figure\, who wrote larger-than-life novels – that translate powerfully to the stage.\nLook Homeward Angel is based on his own life\, and large\, eccentric family in Asheville\, North Carolina\, in the early part of the twentieth century. Like his hero\, Eugene Gant\, Wolfe was filled with words\, images and ideas\, bursting to break away and become a writer.\nWolfe’s genius was recognised by the legendary editor\, Maxwell Perkins\, at Charles Scribner Sons in New York. Perkins had discovered\, and edited\, Ernest Hemingway\nand F Scott Fitzgerald.\nReading Wolfe’s sprawling manuscript\, Perkins realised that he had a masterpiece in his hands\, and worked with Wolfe to wrestle the novel into shape. It was published in1929\, to universal acclaim.
