SUMMARY:The Odd Couple
DESCRIPTION:MBM’s The Odd Couple locks down at Holden Street\nNeil Simon classic gets theatre back in gear at Hindmarsh\nMatt Byrne Media will put a smile on everyone’s dial with Neil Simon’s classic comedy The Odd Couple at Holden Street Theatres from November 4 to 28. \nProducer Matt Byrne says The Odd Couple began on Broadway back in 1965 with Art Carney as neat freak Felix and Walter Matthau as the irascible Oscar. \nMatthau then paired with Jack Lemmon in the Oscar nominated movie version\, and Jack Klugman and Tony Randall carried the fractured friendship further forward to Emmy winning glory in the five-year TV version. \nThe MBM production features David Grybowski as Felix and Byrne as Oscar. \n“David and I have worked together on great shows like the award-winning Driving Miss Daisy\, Same Time Next Year\, Reservoir Dogs and especially Twelve Angry Men\,” Byrne said. \n“It’s wonderful to playing opposite him again\, and I’m delighted to have another long time theatre colleague Rose Vallen co-directing the show with me.” \nByrne said The Odd Couple\, set in 1960s New York\, was Neil Simon’s greatest play. \n“Trouble erupts when divorced sportswriter Oscar Madison and separated TV producer Felix Ungar end up living together in Oscar’s Manhattan apartment\,” he said. \n“It’s an hysterically funny but equally poignant look at male bonding and the ties that grind. \n“Easy-going Oscar’s place which hosts a weekly card game is a disorganised mess. So when finicky Felix moves in he can’t help but try and straighten it out – it’s a recipe for disaster.” \n“Poker buddies Murray (Timothy Cousins)\, Speed (Gavin Cianci)\, Vinnie (Russell Ford) and Roy (Frank Cwiertniak) get caught in the crossfire. \n“Oscar then sets up a double date with the riotous Pigeon Sisters\, Gwendolyn (Bec Mason) and Cecily (Lauren Weber) but Felix can’t forget his wife.” \nThe Odd Couple runs at The Studio at Holden Street Theatres at 34 Holden Street\, Hindmarsh from November 4 ($20 Preview) 5-7\, 11-14\, 18-21 & 25-28 at 7.30 p.m. and November 14\, 21 & 28 at 1.30 p.m. Admission is Adults $30 and Concessions $28 with Group Concessions $28/$26 for 10 or more. Booking Fees and COVID protocols apply. \nBook on mattbyrnemedia.com.au (8262 4906)\, or holdenstreettheatres.com (8225 8888.)

SUMMARY:Dinki Di Double Bill
DESCRIPTION:‘Strike me Lucky! We can welcome you back! \nThroughout the lockdown\, and the long winter months\, we have been plotting the way to welcome you back to ‘live’ theatre – and here it is!  A pair of Aussie shorts in a Dinky-Di Double-Bill\, directed by Bronwyn Chapple. \nFirst up\, Lissa Benyon’s The Margarine Conspiracy\, a gentle spoof on over-earnest environmentalists\, which sees an “ideologically sound” layabout going into battle with his “ideologically unsound” sister in a valiant and hilarious attempt to change her to his way of thinking. \nAnd after a Covid-safe interval\, Ian Austin’s Down Came a Jumbuck\, imagines ‘Waltzing Matilda’ written by an 1890s advertising agency! It’s sheer delight and one that’s sure to have you humming your way out of our lovely theatre. \nSeason runs 6-15 November 2020. \n \n\nPandemically paused for months\, live theatre returns to Stirling on Friday November 6. \nStirling Players will present a double bill of two short Australian plays\, Down Came a Jumbuck\, by Ian Austin\, and The Margarine Conspiracy\, by Lissa Benyon. \nOne takes a light-hearted look at political image-building\, the other at environmental worriers (sic). \nJust imagine one of Australia’s icons being created by an advertising agency in the 19th century. \nAnd does margarine really contain tiny polystyrene balls? \nWhat does Clancy of the Overflow have to do with selling toilet bowls? \nWhen an ideological layabout does battle with his “ideologically unsound” sister\, whose side are you on? \nBronwyn Chapple\, who is directing both plays\, says she picked Jumbuck “because it reflects the fact that Australians cannot get a clear picture of their identity. \n“What Australian is ever going to respect a swaggie or accept that you could put a big jumbuck into a tucker bag? \n“We still don’t know what our national identity is really.  We still don’t agree on a national anthem. \n“I wanted to do Margarine because of its relevance to today\, and a bit because of my own concern about the environment.   This play was written in 1985\, and nothing has changed\, essentially. \n“Margarine is about three characters. Tom\, who is anal about anything affecting the environment – not having a car\, using every plastic bag twice…… \n“Helen\, his girlfriend\, is supportive\, but not that happy about it because it interferes with her lifestyle. She can’t go to the beach and just enjoy it\, because Tom spends all the time picking up Mars Bar wrappers. \n“Tom’s sister is quite different.  She’s a teacher\, who thinks Tom should work and earn his living\, and stop complaining about the environment because our technology and brains will solve the issue\, so why worry? But of course\, they haven’t.” \nUnless the current COVID-19 restrictions are wound back\, seating will be restricted\, so patrons are advised to book early to avoid disappointment. \nThere will be an interval but the serving of wine\, tea\, coffee and even the traditional free welcoming sherry will depend on the COVID-19 rules at the time.

SUMMARY:COSI
DESCRIPTION:SYNOPSIS:\nNowra’s vibrant play is set inside a psychiatric institution in 1971. Lewis\, a young director\, takes on the task of mounting a production of Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte in the burnt-out theatre. He becomes emotionally involved with his patients-cum-actors as his operatic production lurches forward and anti-Vietnam protests rage outside. \nFirst produced in 1992\, COSI has become one of the most successful Australian plays produced in the last two decades. A terrific\, funny play about madness\, illusion\, sanity… and theatre. \nDIRECTOR’S COMMENTS:\nThis is a classic play\, and deserves to be revived. It is one of the great ensemble pieces of Australian theatre. It is very funny\, while having moving moments. It offers wonderful opportunities for a cast to play characters with often tragic backgrounds and mental illnesses\, and then spread their comic wings to create a truly funny and absurd play within a play. \nROLES AVAILABLE \n7 Male characters who can be played by 5 actors \n4 Female characters\, could be played by 3 actors \nAges listed are stage ages \nLewis – male 21 in the play\, has just left university \nLucy – female early 20s\, is doing and MA thesis and lives with Lewis (actor may double this with Julie) \nNick – male early 20s\, also doing a thesis and directs student productions (actor may double this with Justin and Zac) \nJustin – male 35 to 45\, a social worker. He is neat and precise \nRoy – male 40 to 50\, a mental patient who has spent most of his life in institutions \nDoug – male 20 to 30\, has a liking of fires\,  but has not been in institutions very long \nHenry – male 40 to 55\, a former lawyer who is now a patient. Like Roy\, he has spent most of his adult life in institutions \nCherry – female 25 to 35\, has been in institutions for some time \nJulie – female early 20s\, is in a mental institution for the first time because of drug dependency. \nRuth – female 30 to 40\, and obsessive personality\, who is in and out of mental institutions \nZac – male 25 to 35\, the musician of the group who has been in and out of institutions \nSpecial casting considerations: Some singing\, but at strictly amateur level.  An advantage if Zac can play the piano accordion\, guitar or piano. \nREHEARSALS:\nTuesdays & Thursdays at 7.00pm.  Some Sundays TBA at 2pm. To be held the Stirling Community Theatre with some at a nearby venue.\nRehearsals begin in early December 2020. Following a short break over the Christmas period they will resume in early January 2021. \nPERFORMANCES\nFridays & Saturdays: 12\, 13\, 19\, 20\, 26\, 27 March 2021 at 8pm\nSundays: 14 & 21 March 2021 at 4pm \nVENUE:\nStirling Community Theatre\, Avenue Road\, Stirling \nAUDITIONS\nTuesday 10 November 2020 & Thursday 12 November 2020 from 7pm. \nGroups in one hour slots on both dates: 7pm\, 8pm\, 9pm \nBOOKING AN AUDITION \nPlease email contactstirlingplayers@gmail.com to book an audition time\, indicating date and time slot preferred.  \nAUDITION VENUE\nStirling Community Theatre \nMORE INFORMATION:\nContact Megan Dansie.
SUMMARY:Same-Same
DESCRIPTION:SAME-SAME is an online\, inclusive collaboration between No Strings Attached Theatre of Disability (Adelaide\, Australia) and Diverse Abilities Dance Collective\, DADC (Singapore). A Singapore International Foundation Arts for Good project\, this cross-border dance and theatre production will focus on friendship – highlighting the experiences of differently abled performers in Singapore and Australia during COVID-19. How can we connect online? How are we the same? How are we different? How can the arts bring us together? \nOver the course of three months\, seven performers (actors and dancers) from both countries\, got to know each other and explored the idea of SAME-SAME online. Their roles evolved from performers to reveal the sameness of what it means to be human. And beyond COVID-19\, what remains similar? What is different? How can we overcome differences to connect? \nDirected by Jeffrey Tan with Emma Beech\, in collaboration with Subastian Tan (Maya Dance Theatre) and Michaela Cantwell (No Strings Attached Theatre of Disability) and performers from both countries. Come and join us in experiencing their stories of life\, love and dreams today! \nConcurrent performances will be held in person in Adelaide\, Australia and online in Singapore. Book early to avoid disappointment. \nAre we SAME-SAME?

SUMMARY:Bent
DESCRIPTION:Martin Sherman’s ground-breaking play begins in Berlin in June 1934\, on the “Night of the Long Knives”\, when Hitler issued an order to purge all homosexuals from the Army. Max\, a small-timer wheeler-dealer\, and his dancer boyfriend\, Rudy\, are recovering from a night of debauchery with an SA trooper\, when two soldiers burst into their apartment\, thus forcing them on a nightmare odyssey through Nazi Germany – through a Berlin nightclub\, a forest hideout\, a prison-train\, and\, ultimately\, Dachau concentration camp.\nEver the survivor\, in Dachau\, Max elects to wear the Yellow Jewish Star rather than the Pink Triangle for homosexuals. \nBut\, it’s in the dehumanising grind of the prison stone-yards that he learns\, from fellow-prisoner\, Horst\, love\, acceptance\, sacrifice and ultimate redemption. \nStarring Ian McKellen as Max\, this landmark play premiered at London’s Royal Court Theatre in 1979. The following year\, on Broadway\, Richard Gere played Max. Independent Theatre’s production will occur 40 years since the South Australian Theatre Company performed it\, with John Hargreaves and Tim Considine. \nIt will also coincide with\, and be a part of\, the 2020 Feast Festival.
