SUMMARY:Lilac Time
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE:  New venue and new start time for evening performances \nThe South Australian Light Opera Society is delighted to present our latest operetta\, Lilac Time\, at the Domain Theatre in the Marion Cultural Centre.  Because our usual venue is undergoing repairs\, we have had to change to a new venue and change the dates of our shows for this year.  We will also be changing the starting time for our evening performances to 7:30 pm\, meaning an earlier night for everyone.  Matinees will remain at 2:00 pm. \nLilac Time is set in Vienna in 1820 and is based loosely on the life of composer Franz Schubert\, played by Andrew McKinnon.  Schubert and his playboy friend\, Baron Schober (Frikkie Jacobs) are vying for the attention of Mitzi (Katrin Treloar)\, the youngest daughter of glassmaker\, Otto Zell (David Roberts)\, and his wife (Bronwyn Calvett). \nSchubert’s friends\, Kuppell (Andrew Winter)\, Schwind (Peter Muller) and Vogl (Christian Pollnitz) enjoy the fine Vienna weather and food at every opportunity.  Meanwhile\, Mitzi’s sisters\, Fritzi (Kathy Cilento) and Litzi (Carmine Clarke) are keen to marry their boyfriends\, Binder (Bob Daniel) and Brun (Phil Rodda).  Complications follow with the arrival of temperamental prima donna\, Taliani (Kendall Geisler)\, at a party to celebrate the ‘double wedding\,’ out to catch her philandering paramour\, Schober. \nBeautiful music written by Schubert himself has been adapted for our enjoyment to such songs as Hark\, Hark the Lark\, A Song to Remember\, Jolly Good Fellows and Lilac Time in this entertaining operetta.  Costumes of the period complete the scene as the story evolves in old Vienna. \nLilac Time is Directed by Pam Tucker with Musical Direction by Helen Loveday. \nFurther information is available from Pam Tucker at 8294 6582

SUMMARY:LAMBS
DESCRIPTION:Free Agents Youth Theatre presents the world premiere of LAMBS – a theatrical exploration of the experiences of underage boys who enlisted in WWI. From 1914 to 1918\, thousands of Australian boys lied about their ages\, and went off to fight in a war on the other side of the world. They found they could die as well as any man\, but they could never grow old. Like Peter Pan’s lost boys\, they have remained forever young. Over a hundred years later\, they’re all gone…but how do we remember them? This profoundly moving work by Sean Riley features a cast of Adelaide’s finest young actors and creatives.

SUMMARY:Life Without Me
DESCRIPTION:by Daniel Keene \nDIRECTED by Megan Dansie \nAward winning director Megan Dansie directs the SA premiere of this whimsical Australian play. \nDate: Saturday\, 15th June 2024 from 2.00pm \nLocation: The Church of Epiphany Hall\, Crafers (directions provided on booking a slot) \nCast:  4 male (ages – late 20s to 50s)\, 3 female (ages – late 20s to 70s) \nSeason: Friday\, 28th March to Saturday\, 12th April 2025\, with performances on Friday to Sunday. \nRehearsals: Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons\, either in the Stirling Community Theatre or a nearby hall commencing late January\, 2025 \nAuditions: In small groups \nThe play: \nA funny\, honest and heart-warming story that invites us to question life\, or at least our own. \nNigel is the clerk for a run-down 2 star hotel owned by his mother. The hotel (and its toaster) proves to be as dysfunctional as its occupants.  As a storm traps the guests in the hotel\, they come to discover what they really want\, or perhaps need\, out of life. \nCharacters: \nAll ages are very approximate stage ages \nNigel: A hotel clerk (30s to 40s). Ability with physical comedy a plus. Nigel is nonchalant rather than welcoming; querulous rather than patient. He hasn’t a pen for guests to sign the register\, but questions the effectiveness of using a pencil. \nJohn: Guest (40s +)\, wants to leave the town and start a new life and is in some emotional stasis at the start of the play. He is a man alone\, and if not content with that\, at least without hope that anything will change. \nRoy: Travelling salesman (50s +). He is divorced with a grown-up son.\nRoy arrives at the hotel and meets someone from his past or are they? \nAlice: Guest (50s +).  She is waiting to move into her new life. \nMrs Spence: Nigel’s mum (60s-70s).

SUMMARY:Moonlight and Magnolias
DESCRIPTION:Written by Ron Hutchinson\nDirected by Harry Dewar\n6-8 and 13-15 June 2024 at 7.30 pm\n9 June 2004 at 3.00 pm and 15 June 2024 at 2.00 pm \nCast: Adam Schultz as “David O Selznick”\, Scott Battersby as “Victor Fleming”\, Terry Crowe as “Ben Hecht” and Rebecca Gardiner as “Miss Poppenguhl” \nIn June at the Arts Theatre find out how the film “Gone with the Wind” was saved from being gone with the wind! \nHollywood\, February 1939: Acclaimed movie producer David O. Selznick has a problem: his massively hyped production of “Gone With The Wind” is bleeding big money\, the script is unfilmable\, he has fired the director and the production has been shut down. Disaster looms! He needs a new script and a new director now! \nWith renowned screenwriter Ben Hecht (who hasn’t read the book) and celebrated director Victor Fleming (already up to his eyeballs in directing “The Wizard of Oz”)\, and a diet of bananas and peanuts\, he locks the group in his office for five days to create a screenplay that will save the film. Filming the burning of Atlanta is easier than this! \n“It’s a blend of lively nonsense and a tribute to the golden years of Hollywood moving making\, with over-sized egos and larger than life personalities\,” explains director Harry Dewar. “Based loosely on the real difficulties that the film faced in 1939\, it’s an insight into what might have happened to get one of the greatest movies ever made up onto the screen.” \nFrankly my dears\, you must see this play!!

SUMMARY:THE BOY FROM OZ
DESCRIPTION:Written By: By Arrangement with David Spicer Productions www.davidspicer.com.au Music and Lyrics by Peter Allen. Book by Nick Enright Original Production by Ben Gannon and Robert Fox \nCreative Team: DIRECTOR: Selena Britz\nMUSICAL DIRECTOR: Jane Feast\nCHOREOGRAPHER: Carmel Vistoli \n\nThe Boy From Oz is the most successful Australian musical ever and the first to make it to Broadway. It is a musical biography/tribute to the late great Peter Allen. Peter Allen was born in the outback Australian town of Tenterfield in 1944. He made his entertainment debut at the age of 5 impersonating Al Jolson. As a teenager he became a pop star and then toured Asia. There he met Judy Garland who took him to London where he met and become engaged to her daughter Liza Minnelli. In the US Peter enjoyed the highs of success by winning an Oscar\, selling out performances in Radio City Music Hall\, and receiving adulation when he returned to Australia. There were also plenty of lows … breaking up with his wife\, staging a Broadway flop\, the death of his partner and his own battle with illness. Peter Allen had an extraordinary life which producer Ben Gannon realized had the potential to become a magnificent musical and with Robert Fox they turned it into the smash hit it became. \nThe Boy From Oz is a class above all other ‘jukebox’ musicals. The late Nick Enright skillfully weaved his plot around the life and complexities of Peter Allen. The songs and lyrics sit easily with the rhythm of the piece and with the characters as they enter and re-enter his life\, be they dead or alive. It leaps\, as does Peter himself\, from past to present and back to past all within the familiar context of one of his energy-packed concerts. \n\nInformation Session: 03/06/2024\nMaylands Church of Christ Hall\, corner Portrush Road and Nora Street Maylands at 7:45 pm \n\nAudition Information: TRYBOOKING \n\n\n\nAudition Information #:0\n\n\nDate:\n16/06/2024\n\n\nTime From – Time to:\n2:30 pm to 10:00 pm at Maylands Church of Christ Hall\, corner Portrush Road and Nora Street\, Maylands\n\n\nAudition Information #:1\n\n\nDate:\n17/06/2024\n\n\nTime From – Time to:\n7:30 pm – 10:00 pm at Maylands Church of Christ Hall\, corner Portrush Road and Nora Street\, Maylands\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nCharacter Descriptions #:0\n\n\nRole Name:\nPETER ALLEN (Male)\n\n\nGender:\nMale\n\n\nStage Age:\n30\n\n\nRole Information:\nThe great Australian entertainer\, singer\, songwriter\, and dancer.
SUMMARY:The Penelopiad
DESCRIPTION:Written by: Margaret Atwood \nDirected by: Kristen Telfer \nSynopsis:   “The Penelopiad” by Margaret Atwood is an adaptation of Homer’s “Iliad” and “Odyssey”\, told from the perspective of Odysseus’ wife Penelope.\nLong after the events of the story are over\, Penelope tells the audience her story from the afterlife\, from her miraculous birth and childhood as the daughter of a king and a water nymph to her marriage to the renowned and wily Odysseus. The complacent idyll of Penelope’s life as a married noblewoman is shattered when news arrives that her sister Helen has absconded from her own marriage and run off with a young prince from an enemy state. Odysseus leaves his wife and young son to do his duty\, and Penelope’s ordeal begins. \nAfter Troy is sacked\, Odysseus fails to return home. As the years pass\, Penelope finds herself surrounded by a crowd of would-be suitors\, eager to lay claim to the widow and her considerable wealth\, whose encroachments on her hospitality becomepushier by the day. Greatly restricted in her means to deal with this threat\, Penelope relies on the support of her loyal maids in her bid to ward off the unwanted attentions until her husband returns. But these same Maids are also with Penelope in the afterlife\, to observe and participate in her narration of the events of her life… and remind her of the role she played in the tragic\nending to theirs. \nCharacter Descriptions: \nRoles: Penelope\, Telemachus\, Odysseus\, and twelve Maids \nGender: Undefined       Stage Age: 18+ \n\n\n\nGenders given are of the characters.
