SUMMARY:42nd Street
DESCRIPTION:The year is 1933 and Broadway\, like the rest of the US\, has fallen on hard times.\nUndeterred\, revered Broadway director Julian Marsh mounts an ambitious new musical production as a final hoorah before his retirement. Excitement abounds amongst the young and talented hopefuls of the Broadway community\, including newcomer\, Peggy Sawyer\, who arrives late to auditions but captures the eye of both Julian Marsh and Billy Lawlor\, the juvenile lead.\nMeanwhile the leading lady\, fading star Dorothy Brock whose wealthy paramour Abner Dillon is providing the backing for the show\, takes an immediate dislike to the talented newcomer. But when fate takes a turn before opening night\, Peggy gets her chance to step in and become a star.

SUMMARY:Cyprus Avenue
DESCRIPTION:Eric notices something very unusual and disturbing about Mary-May\, his five-week-old grand-daughter. Although his wife and daughter think Mary-May is the ‘best baby in Belfast’\, Eric can see that she is really the famous Sinn Fein president and politician Gerry Adams – but without a beard. \nSet in a Northern Ireland now at peace\, Eric struggles to shake off his experiences of The Troubles. Why has Gerry Adams now infiltrated his home? What should he do? Perhaps his psychiatrist can help him to make sense of his world. Or perhaps not. \nCyprus Avenue\, David Ireland’s funny and shocking black comedy\, won Best New Play at the Irish Times Theatre Awards in 2017 and Stephen Rea won Best Actor for his portrayal of Eric. The play also won the James Tait Black Prize for Drama in the same year. \nThis is another Red Phoenix play that will have you talking about it long after it is over. \nHow well do we support people in our community who are struggling? \nDavid Ireland also wrote Ulster American\, which was recently performed at Holden Street Theatres to rave reviews. \nWarning: violence and extreme coarse language\n(recommended for ages 15+)

SUMMARY:Grow Up\, Grandad
DESCRIPTION:Poppy is eleven years old and has “attitude”. When she finds herself living with her cantankerous grandfather\, a man she neither likes nor loves\, all hell breaks loose. Grow up Grandad is an inter-generational bitter-sweet comedy that deals with love and loss\, hope and sadness as the relationship between Poppy and her Grandad is first thrown together and eventually torn apart.\n“The play is dramatic\, painful\, provocative and often hugely funny. It is also very human which much theatre is not. Steel writes crisp\, sharp dialogue\, both tickling our funny bone and engaging our mental processes.” – British Theatre Guide \nWritten by  : Gordon Steel\nDirected by : Warren McKenzie

SUMMARY:Gypsy - A Musical Fable
DESCRIPTION:Gypsy is one of the greatest musicals of all time\, with some of the most memorable tunes ever written\, including “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” and “Let Me Entertain You”. Set in the world of burlesque and vaudeville in the 1920s and 30s\, this is the story of a domineering mother’s determination to pursue fame and stardom for her daughters.\nRose is the classic stage-mother: outrageous\, brash\, tough and larger than life; and her dream for success is a dream she lives through her daughters. Rose’s fanatic determination pushes her family’s loyalty to breaking point\, but from the most unlikely of places emerges one of the twentieth century’s most illustrious and ingenious entertainers – Gypsy Rose Lee.\nAs we witness this transformation\, we see a clear-eyed celebration of the complex impulses that drive all dreamers and wanna-be performers.

SUMMARY:Ink
DESCRIPTION:University of Adelaide Theatre Guild presents\nAn Amateur Production by Arrangement with Curtis Brown Group Ltd \nINK\nWritten by James Graham\nDirected by Robert Bell and Rebecca Kemp\n12th – 22nd October 2023\nLittle Theatre\nAUSTRALIAN PREMIERE! \n“I want to tell you a story. And it’s true. That’s what makes it a good f**king story\, right\, ’cause all the best stories are true.” \nFleet Street. 1969. The Sun rises. \nJames Graham’s red-topped play leads with the birth of England’s most influential newspaper when a young and rebellious Rupert Murdoch asked the impossible and launched its first editor’s quest\, against all odds\, to give the people what they want. \nInk centers around an unlikely match-up of David and Goliath proportions between Murdoch’s newly purchased The Sun and the best selling newspaper in the world\, The Mirror. Prior to purchase\, The Sun was a struggling\, left leaning Broadsheet destined for failure. Enter an ambitious Rupert Murdoch\, ready to disrupt Fleet Street\, rogue editor Larry Lamb and an unlikely team of underdog reporters and you’ve got a story good enough for the front page. \nThis ensemble comedy is jam-packed with both hilarious and gripping dramatic moments that tell one hell of a story.\nIt may even have you rooting for Australia’s own Media Mogul himself. \nContent Warning: Frequent coarse language\, adult themes\, partial nudity\, depiction of smoking. \nTickets: $25 Full / $20 Concession
