SUMMARY:THE 39 STEPS
DESCRIPTION:THE THIRTY-NINE STEPS \nAdapted by Patrick Barlow \nFrom the novel by John Buchan\nFrom the movie by Alfred Hitchcock \nDirected by Mark Wickett \n“Although clearly dangerous\, he is quite good-looking\, actually” \nA whisky\, two stubborn singletons bound by handcuffs\, and a chase from London to the Scottish Highlands\, The 39 Steps takes a Hitchcock masterpiece based on the ground-breaking spy novel by John Buchan and transforms it into a theatrical spectacle of comedy\, action\, romance\, and fresh fish. \n“On the surface\, it’s a classic thriller set in the mid-1930s\, when the world was again frightened of war – terrified of whatever The 39 Steps could be\,” says director Mark Wickett\, “yet when you look beneath that menace\, the two main characters are just lonely individuals caught up in something much bigger than themselves\, trying to deny their mutual attraction.” \nAdapted by Patrick Barlow for the West End and Broadway\, this Olivier and two-timeTony award winning play has dozens of characters – all played by a ridiculously talented cast of four – with sound effects created live by an on-stage foley artist. The play is a pastiche of Hitchcock’s 1935 film (and his other works)\, creating laugh-out-loud comedy from witty dialogue – often unchanged from Hitchcock’s writers – and inventive stagecraft\, on a stripped-back set in the intimate surroundings of Adelaide’s Little Theatre. You’ll almost feel the rush of the Flying Scotsman as it hurtles over the Forth Bridge; brace yourselves for a plane you’re convinced will crash into the front row; and swear there’s more than four people on stage. \nWickett continues: “I want to make audiences laugh\, yet preserve Hitchcock’s message that despite their unfortunate ordeals\, love must prevail.” \nCAST\nThomas Midena\, Imogen Deller-Evans\, Emily Branford\, Maxwell Whigham and Angela Short. \nCONTENT WARNING\nMild violence\, sexual tension\, political ideology.\nThe performance may also contain haze effects\, strobe lighting\, with simulations of gunshots\, whisky drinking\, cigarette smoking\, and fish frying. \nTICKETS\n$25 Full Price\n$20 Concession\nSchool Groups: $15 per student\nSchools/Teachers: please email theatreguild@adelaide.edu.au for invoicing \nPerformance Dates\nFriday 25 October at 7:30pm\nSaturday 26 October at 7:30pm\nSunday 27 October at 4pm\nWednesday 30 October at 6:30pm – *with post-show Q&A*\nThursday 31 October at 7:30pm\nFriday 1 November at 7:30pm\nSaturday 2 November at 7:30pm\nSunday 3 November at 4pm

SUMMARY:A Hard God
DESCRIPTION:Peter Kenna’s A Hard God is semi-autobiographical and prompted him to say about this magnificent 1973 Australian play\, ‘In other plays you have to invent stories. Only occasionally do you write out of your veins.’\n\n\nA Hard God is set in Sydney in 1946 and tells the story of the Cassidys\, three working-class Irish-Australian brothers and their families\, struggling to reconcile their faith with the harsh realities of post-war life. Middle brother Dan and his wife Aggie suffered most during the Great Depression\, but now have become the rock on which the rest of the family depends. As each brother struggles to navigate conflict and adversity\, a younger Cassidy\, Joe\, is confronted by the realisation of his deep attraction to his best mate and the crisis of faith this brings. When unexpected tragedy strikes\, the ensuing conflict and upheaval results in circumstances that make for intense family drama\, with events as topical today as in the 1940s.\n\nWith a great cast\, led by Lindsay Dunn as Dan and April Stuart as Aggie\, and directed by Harry Dewar\, this will be an unmissable play. \n\n\nBookings from October 17 at https://www.trybooking.com/CUUAS\n\n\nAlternatively\, call 0436 262 628 or email bookings@stjudesplayers.asn.au

SUMMARY:Mother and Son
DESCRIPTION:Ageing isn’t for the old or faint-hearted…. \nThis poignant tribute to ageing is about dependence\, love\, and family and being driven up the wall by someone you love but never outsmart! \nWritten by Geoffrey Atherden – Directed by Jude Hines \nThe Rep breathes new life into the celebrated Australian TV series in this play\, commissioned for stage by the original series writer\, Geoffrey Atherden. \nVoted the best Australian TV series ever\, this stage production is filled with laughter\, nostalgia\, and poignant moments exploring the themes of family bonds and the challenges of ageing. \nThis production will entertain audiences young & old. \nMaggie Beare is in the early stages of dementia\, and her younger son\, Arthur\, reluctantly lives with her. Despite being increasingly forgetful\, Maggie is lucid enough to strategically manipulate Arthur\, usually for something outlandish and inconvenient. Their family is dysfunctional\, and Arthur’s budding love life is ‘on the rocks’ before he gets to hand-holding. Audiences can expect a hearty\, laugh-out-loud-great time. \nWe introduce the renowned Adelaide performers Penni Hamilton–Smith in the Maggie Beare role\, originally played by Ruth Cracknell\, and Patrick Clements as Arthur Beare\, originally played by Garry McDonald. A talented supporting cast includes Stephen Bills\, Nikki Gaertner\, Maggie Mooney\, Sandy Whitelaw\, Jess Corrie\, and introducing Alifa Willoughby and Henry Bacon.
