SUMMARY:THE BOY FROM OZ
DESCRIPTION:Written By: By Arrangement with David Spicer Productions www.davidspicer.com.au Music and Lyrics by Peter Allen. Book by Nick Enright Original Production by Ben Gannon and Robert Fox \nCreative Team: DIRECTOR: Selena Britz\nMUSICAL DIRECTOR: Jane Feast\nCHOREOGRAPHER: Carmel Vistoli \n\nThe Boy From Oz is the most successful Australian musical ever and the first to make it to Broadway. It is a musical biography/tribute to the late great Peter Allen. Peter Allen was born in the outback Australian town of Tenterfield in 1944. He made his entertainment debut at the age of 5 impersonating Al Jolson. As a teenager he became a pop star and then toured Asia. There he met Judy Garland who took him to London where he met and become engaged to her daughter Liza Minnelli. In the US Peter enjoyed the highs of success by winning an Oscar\, selling out performances in Radio City Music Hall\, and receiving adulation when he returned to Australia. There were also plenty of lows … breaking up with his wife\, staging a Broadway flop\, the death of his partner and his own battle with illness. Peter Allen had an extraordinary life which producer Ben Gannon realized had the potential to become a magnificent musical and with Robert Fox they turned it into the smash hit it became. \nThe Boy From Oz is a class above all other ‘jukebox’ musicals. The late Nick Enright skillfully weaved his plot around the life and complexities of Peter Allen. The songs and lyrics sit easily with the rhythm of the piece and with the characters as they enter and re-enter his life\, be they dead or alive. It leaps\, as does Peter himself\, from past to present and back to past all within the familiar context of one of his energy-packed concerts. \n\nInformation Session: 03/06/2024\nMaylands Church of Christ Hall\, corner Portrush Road and Nora Street Maylands at 7:45 pm \n\nAudition Information: TRYBOOKING \n\n\n\nAudition Information #:0\n\n\nDate:\n16/06/2024\n\n\nTime From – Time to:\n2:30 pm to 10:00 pm at Maylands Church of Christ Hall\, corner Portrush Road and Nora Street\, Maylands\n\n\nAudition Information #:1\n\n\nDate:\n17/06/2024\n\n\nTime From – Time to:\n7:30 pm – 10:00 pm at Maylands Church of Christ Hall\, corner Portrush Road and Nora Street\, Maylands\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nCharacter Descriptions #:0\n\n\nRole Name:\nPETER ALLEN (Male)\n\n\nGender:\nMale\n\n\nStage Age:\n30\n\n\nRole Information:\nThe great Australian entertainer\, singer\, songwriter\, and dancer. From 1914 to 1918\, thousands of Australian boys lied about their ages\, and went off to fight in a war on the other side of the world. SUMMARY:LAMBS
DESCRIPTION:Free Agents Youth Theatre presents the world premiere of LAMBS – a theatrical exploration of the experiences of underage boys who enlisted in WWI. From 1914 to 1918\, thousands of Australian boys lied about their ages\, and went off to fight in a war on the other side of the world. They found they could die as well as any man\, but they could never grow old. Like Peter Pan’s lost boys\, they have remained forever young. Over a hundred years later\, they’re all gone…but how do we remember them? This profoundly moving work by Sean Riley features a cast of Adelaide’s finest young actors and creatives.

SUMMARY:Lilac Time
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE:  New venue and new start time for evening performances \nThe South Australian Light Opera Society is delighted to present our latest operetta\, Lilac Time\, at the Domain Theatre in the Marion Cultural Centre.  Because our usual venue is undergoing repairs\, we have had to change to a new venue and change the dates of our shows for this year.  We will also be changing the starting time for our evening performances to 7:30 pm\, meaning an earlier night for everyone.  Matinees will remain at 2:00 pm. \nLilac Time is set in Vienna in 1820 and is based loosely on the life of composer Franz Schubert\, played by Andrew McKinnon.  Schubert and his playboy friend\, Baron Schober (Frikkie Jacobs) are vying for the attention of Mitzi (Katrin Treloar)\, the youngest daughter of glassmaker\, Otto Zell (David Roberts)\, and his wife (Bronwyn Calvett). \nSchubert’s friends\, Kuppell (Andrew Winter)\, Schwind (Peter Muller) and Vogl (Christian Pollnitz) enjoy the fine Vienna weather and food at every opportunity.  Meanwhile\, Mitzi’s sisters\, Fritzi (Kathy Cilento) and Litzi (Carmine Clarke) are keen to marry their boyfriends\, Binder (Bob Daniel) and Brun (Phil Rodda).  Complications follow with the arrival of temperamental prima donna\, Taliani (Kendall Geisler)\, at a party to celebrate the ‘double wedding\,’ out to catch her philandering paramour\, Schober. \nBeautiful music written by Schubert himself has been adapted for our enjoyment to such songs as Hark\, Hark the Lark\, A Song to Remember\, Jolly Good Fellows and Lilac Time in this entertaining operetta.  Costumes of the period complete the scene as the story evolves in old Vienna. \nLilac Time is Directed by Pam Tucker with Musical Direction by Helen Loveday. \nFurther information is available from Pam Tucker at 8294 6582

SUMMARY:LABOUR OF LOVE
DESCRIPTION:Written By: James Graham (Other plays include Ink\, Dear England\, This House) \nCreative Team: Directed by Kym Clayton \n\nLabour of Love is a political comedy set in the local constituency office of British Labour MP David Lyons in North Nottinghamshire in the twenty-seven-year period between summer 1990 and spring 2017.\nDavid Lyons MP cares about modernisation and “electability”\, but his constituency agent (i.e. chief of staff) Jean Whittaker cares about principles and her community. The action of the play is set far away from the Westminster bubble in the party’s traditional northern heartlands\, and explores the clash of philosophy\, culture\, and class against the backdrop of the Labour Party over a period of 25 years\, as it moves from the time of labour leaders Kinnock through to Blair and Corbyn.\nAlthough the play is about UK politics\, it is written in a way that it evokes feelings about our own political system of party politics. Some themes are eternal!\nThe play begins on 9th June 2017\, the early hours of the morning in a David Lyon’s constituency office. David waits anxiously with Jean for the results of the snap General Election\, and the first reports suggest a hung parliament. Having been re-elected six times since 1990\, David faces the possibility of finally being voted out while his party\, despite some gains\, looks likely to be denied victory for the third time in a row.\nWhy is Labour losing seats in its traditional northern heartland while winning ‘safe’ Conservative ones elsewhere? What’s shifted within the party and country as a whole? David and Jean have witnessed many changes within the Labour movement over the past three decades: the election of Tony Blair as leader in 1994 and the birth of ‘New Labour’; the party’s landslide victory in the 1997 General Election; reduced majorities in the 2001 and 2005 elections; Tony Blair stepping down in 2007; successive leaders\, Gordon Brown\, Ed Miliband and now Jeremy Corbyn…\nThrough it all they’ve worked together side-by-side – David advocating the need for a new approach\, Jean championing the old values. Despite their many differences\, a grudging respect has grown between them\, and\, with it\, affection. All this is pulled into sharp focus by the return of David’s ex-wife\, Elizabeth\, who suggests they give their marriage another try… Having guided the MP through six successive victories\, is his fiery constituency agent prepared to see him lose now on the home front?\nREVIEWS\n“… unexpectedly proven to be box office gold” ~ Time Out\n“It is in fact startlingly funny\, peppered with one-liners and jokes” ~ What’s On Stage\n“And what makes this such a good and gripping piece of theatre is that it doesn’t preach us sermons about press ethics but leaves us to draw our own conclusions … It strikes me as a first-rate play” ~ Guardian\n“…diligently researched and informative … an inventive hybrid of Much Ado About Nothing\, Yes Minister and Stephen Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along” ~ The Evening Standard \n\nInformation Session: \n\nAudition Information: \n\n\n\nAudition Information #:0\n\n\nDate:\n08/06/2024\n\n\nTime From – Time to:\n11:00 – 14:00\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nCharacter Descriptions #:0\n\n\nRole Name:\nDAVID LYONS: CO-LEAD ROLE.\n\n\nGender:\nMale\n\n\nStage Age:\n\n\n\nRole Information:\nStage age late 40s-early 50s.\nCultured English accent. A Labour MP. A ‘few years younger’ than Jean\, David was also born and brought up locally before winning a scholarship to Oxford University. Part of a new generation of Labour MPs\, he’s keen to modernize the party\, rebranding it in the hope of making it more electable after years in opposition. Jean’s concerned he’s more interested in image than content\, but she recognises his passion and pragmatism. 534 cues\n\n\nCharacter Descriptions #:1\n\n\nRole Name:\nJEAN WHITTAKER: CO-LEAD ROLE\n\n\nGender:\nFemale\n\n\nStage Age:\n\n\n\nRole Information:\nStage age late 40s-early 50s.\nA constituency agent. Not a cultured English accent – more regional but not too broad. Actor playing this role will need to learn a few sentences in Cantonese. Born and bred in North Nottinghamshire\, Jean’s been a card-carrying member of the Labour Party since the age of 14. Described by David as ‘hard as nails’\, she’s spent a lifetime fighting for the rights of the working-class left in her community. DESCRIPTION:Written by Ron Hutchinson\nDirected by Harry Dewar\n6-8 and 13-15 June 2024 at 7.30 pm\n9 June 2004 at 3.00 pm and 15 June 2024 at 2.00 pm \nCast: Adam Schultz as “David O Selznick”\, Scott Battersby as “Victor Fleming”\, Terry Crowe as “Ben Hecht” and Rebecca Gardiner as “Miss Poppenguhl” \nIn June at the Arts Theatre find out how the film “Gone with the Wind” was saved from being gone with the wind! \nHollywood\, February 1939: Acclaimed movie producer David O. Selznick has a problem: his massively hyped production of “Gone With The Wind” is bleeding big money\, the script is unfilmable\, he has fired the director and the production has been shut down. Disaster looms! He needs a new script and a new director now! \nWith renowned screenwriter Ben Hecht (who hasn’t read the book) and celebrated director Victor Fleming (already up to his eyeballs in directing “The Wizard of Oz”)\, and a diet of bananas and peanuts\, he locks the group in his office for five days to create a screenplay that will save the film. Filming the burning of Atlanta is easier than this! \n“It’s a blend of lively nonsense and a tribute to the golden years of Hollywood moving making\, with over-sized egos and larger than life personalities\,” explains director Harry Dewar. “Based loosely on the real difficulties that the film faced in 1939\, it’s an insight into what might have happened to get one of the greatest movies ever made up onto the screen.” \nFrankly my dears\, you must see this play!!
